" My passion for networking and contributing something back to the society are two big reasons why I'm so excited to be a part of the Millennium Fellowship Program. I believe this will give me a platform to connect with more like minded individuals, organisations, and create a path that aligns with SDGs and UNAI for sustainable future ahead. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: প্রজেক্ট - এখানেই শুরু

এখানেই শুরু is a social initiative under SDG 03: Good Health and Well-Being, aimed at addressing the financial barriers to accessing healthcare in Bangladesh. A significant portion of the population struggles to afford medical treatment due to high out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses, which account for over 67% of total health expenditure (World Bank, 2024). Our project focuses on raising awareness, promoting affordable healthcare access, and bridging the gap between underprivileged communities and available medical resources.
Through surveys, hospital visits, and community engagement, এখানেই শুরু identifies real-life challenges faced by patients and families in meeting healthcare costs. By highlighting these issues, we aim to advocate for policy attention and sustainable solutions that ensure healthcare becomes a right, not a privilege, for every individual in Bangladesh.

About the Millennium Fellow

Afia Tasnim is a third year undergrad student, doing a double major in Finance and Business Information System at BRAC University. She was born and brought up in Dhaka. She is currently serving as an Assistant Director of Marketing & Finance in one of the prominent clubs of the university - BRAC University Entrepreneurship Development Forum, a club that thrives to empower entrepreneurs. Besides, she is a student mentor who guides the first year students through their journey. As hobby, she does anchoring and volunteering in university programmes.
However, since her childhood, she wanted to do something for the underprivileged community. Her heart sank every time she saw someone suffering from illness due to the lacking of financial support they needed in their most vulnerable time. That's how the idea of "Ekhanei Shuru Foundation" rooted in her brain, an organisation that may possibly aid those in need of financial support in their medical journey as well as those with the need with mental support in times of great loss and grief.
