ABOUT THE MILLENNIUM FELLOWSHIP - CLASS OF 2025

United Nations Academic Impact and MCN are proud to partner on the Millennium Fellowship. This year, 60,000+ young leaders applied to join the Class of 2025 on 7,000+ campuses across 170 nations. 290+ campuses worldwide (less than 5%) were selected to host the 4,500+ Millennium Fellows.

Millennium Fellowship Project: Optimization of Sustainable Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems

Dublar Char, a remote coastal island of Bangladesh, remains disconnected from the national power grid despite being seasonally populated by thousands of fishing communities. This study proposes and evaluates a location-specific Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) integrating solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, battery storage, and a diesel generator to ensure reliable off-grid electricity access. Using one year of real-time climate and load data sourced from NASA POWER and national grid proxies, we developed a high-resolution demand profile tailored to Dublar Char’s seasonal energy usage. Multiple optimization algorithms—including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE) and Seagull Optimization (SO) Algorithms—were implemented to minimize system cost while maintaining reliability. The study identifies optimal system configurations under realistic constraints and demonstrates the techno-economic feasibility of deploying HRES in riverine and char regions of Bangladesh. The results offer a replicable framework for sustainable electrification in off-grid, ecologically sensitive, and disaster-prone coastal zones.
Measurable goals I aim to accomplish within August 2025:
Data Collection & Processing
Complete acquisition of 12 months of real-time climate data for Dublar Char from NASA POWER and local proxies.
Finalize seasonal demand profile generation with at least 90% accuracy compared to estimated community usage patterns.
