" "Change happens when tech meets tenacity. Growing up in Bangladesh, I've seen how lies fracture communities but I've also seen truth rebuild them. That’s why I've made it my mission to use the little technological knowledge I have to push back against misinformation in the digital space. The Millennium Fellowship is my catalyst to scale this vision, learn from fierce allies and turn the SDGs into action. I really believe that with the right guidelines, co-operation,tools and intentions we can shape a future where truth stands stronger than lies." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Verify IT

“Verify It” is a community-based project that helps people understand what is true and what is false on the internet. In my community, many people believe and share wrong information because they cannot check if it is real. This creates fear, confusion, and sometimes even violence. My project teaches people simple ways to verify news, social media posts and messages before rumours spreads. I conduct awareness sessions, give easy checklists and guide people on where to report cyber problems. The main goal of “Verify It” is to build a safer online space where everyone can protect themselves from misinformation, phishing Scams, Identity Theft, imposter Scams, online fraud, Blackmailing etc. The project will continue even after the Millennium Fellowship, as I want to reach more communities and create long-term change.

About the Millennium Fellow

Shams Rubaiat Shammo is a Computer Science and Engineering student at BRAC University who sees technology as both a challenge and a hope. He knows it can harm the environment and disrupt harmony yet he believes it holds a greater role in building a better future. Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Shammo dreams of using technology to fight misinformation and create safer and better digital spaces. Beyond academics, he finds meaning in teaching, learning, mentoring and simply sharing knowledge and kindness with people around him.
