" “Lots of girls like me really want to fly. They just need wings!”
This quote from my mentee in Tamil Nadu, India, captures the beauty and necessity of education. Improving access to schools is not only a moral imperative, it has an incredible effect on global economics and health outcomes. Cartooning, teaching, writing, and innovation - my passions can all be leveraged in service of equality in education, and I'm eager to seek impact as a Millennium Fellow. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Spirit Magazine: Writing for Education
To a cartoonist like myself, the strip Calvin and Hobbes is legendary. Author Bill Watterson won readers’ hearts with the hilarious comics. He conveyed ineffable truths about philosophy, life, or death, with a few simple sketches just as effectively. My sister and I understood the power of media to touch and inspire readers when we founded our magazine, Spirit. Along with contributing articles and writing various columns, I have been the cartoonist for our magazine since its conception. I take snapshots of nature, philosophical ideas, or fun stories that come into my mind and create one-page comics with vivid characters (like “Wheatgrass the Rascalâ€). I played a pivotal role in shifting our work to a digital medium, quadrupling our subscriber count (100 to 400+ and counting)! The proceeds from the magazine sponsor the education of 6 underprivileged children in India through BigHelp for Education. I seek to continue that work, reaching more subscribers through our website, sponsoring 10 students. Additionally, a critical element of our project is accessibility: creating media to inform at least 10,000 students how to take steps combating global education inequities. I see this work, using my schooling to help others access education, as an immense honor.
