" Driven by a passion for sustainability and a clear vision to revolutionize waste management, I aim to transform waste-to-value concepts into real-world solutions. The Millennium Fellowship will amplify my ability to address climate change and resource conservation through innovative, community-focused projects. I'm eager to learn skills and work with others that are in line with the UNAI principles and SDGs, making a lasting impact on a future that is greener and more resilient. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Trash to Treasure (T2T)

Ayesha Abid, a Millennium Fellow, is in charge of the independent project known as Trash to Treasure (T2T). Through the conversion of waste into useful resources, T2T addresses the pressing issue of waste management mismanagement. The project demonstrates how agricultural residues like sugarcane bagasse can be transformed into lignin-based hydrogels and wound-healing plasters by combining community action through clean-up drives, awareness workshops, and upcycling activities. In addition to demonstrating how waste management can contribute to both healthcare solutions and environmental protection, this dual approach also supports sustainable practices. To demonstrate lignin's potential in biomedical applications, T2T will organize at least three community workshops, two clean-up/upcycling drives, and one research-based seminar during the Millennium Fellowship period (August–December 2025). A digital campaign will further spread awareness on sustainable waste practices and innovative reuse strategies. The project aims to directly engage at least 150 participants in-person and reach over 500 individuals through online platforms.

About the Millennium Fellow

Ayesha Abid, a student majoring in environmental sciences at Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering, and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), excels in her bachelor's program. Born and raised in Quetta, she developed a strong commitment to addressing important regional issues like sustainability, climate change, and waste management. She has organized and participated in scientific competitions, seminars, and workshops, gaining knowledge and influence. Because of the potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties of lignin, her area of interest lie in novel waste-to-value strategies. Ayesha's objectives are to bring about lasting positive change, advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and promote global sustainability.
