Millennium Fellowship Project: Menstrual Hygiene

The project was designed with the objective of educating young girls aged 15–17 on the physiology of menstruation, menstrual hygiene management, and safe sanitary practices, break cultural silence and stigma by promoting open and positive conversations about menstruation, and empower students with confidence and self-awareness, helping them view menstruation as a natural and healthy process. The project was implemented between September and October 2025 across three secondary schools in Wudil Local Government the government girls secondary, Golden age school, and ADUSTECH staff secondary school. Each outreach session lasted between 60 to 90 minutes and was conducted by a volunteer team of some female advocates of menstrual hygiene, health educators, and youth association members. We adopted a participatory approach that emphasized interaction and dialogue rather than lecture style delivery we solicited for the required materials from the town philanthropist.
The sessions began with a brief introduction to the female reproductive system, explaining menstruation as a normal biological process. We used charts, educational posters, and simple demonstrations to make the information relatable. This was followed by discussions on proper hygiene practices such as regular changing of pads, safe disposal, washing, and maintaining cleanliness during menstruation. A segment of the outreach was devoted to teaching how to make simple reusable sanitary pads from clean cloth an alternative for girls who cannot afford commercial pads regularly.
