" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers a platform to transform local passion into global impact. My work is driven by the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to live free from the chains of substance abuse and empowered to reach their full potential. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Bayero Drug Free Ride
The Bayero Drug Free Ride is a community-driven drug abuse prevention initiative designed to build a network of young advocates across Kano State. The project recruited 30 students from diverse communities and trained them on drug-use prevention, peer education, community engagement, and effective advocacy strategies. The goal of the project is to empower young people with the knowledge and skills they need to champion drug-free communities, influence positive behavioural change, and extend awareness to vulnerable populations especially secondary school students.
After the training, each participant was required to identify a secondary school within their community and deliver an awareness session on the dangers of drug and substance abuse. This hands-on engagement not only strengthened their leadership capacity but also expanded the project’s outreach to younger adolescents who are at high risk.
The project, therefore, serves as both a capacity-building platform and a grassroots prevention mechanism, fostering a sustainable network of youth committed to promoting a drug-free Kano.
