UNITED NATIONS ACADEMIC IMPACT AND MCN PROUDLY PRESENT AASTHA PRIYA, A MILLENNIUM FELLOW FOR THE CLASS OF 2025.
University of Cambridge | Cambridge, United Kingdom | Advancing SDG 16 & UNAI 9

" I'm excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it will allow me to collaborate with others who are equally committed to creating a more just and inclusive world. I do this work because I believe that amplifying the voices of those who are overlooked is one of the most important steps toward meaningful change. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Democratic Dreams
My project will focus on exploring how many Global South countries after post-colonisation struggle to build appropriate political structures that truly encapsulate a democratic, ethical leadership. I will examine this by looking at countries such as India, Haiti, Mexico and China. Through this analysis I will fixate on how after emancipation from imperialist power not only did these countries struggle to build on the values they fought for during the fight for freedom but reverted back to a form of oppression. This project will be necessary in understanding today’s geopolitical climate especially towards growing global powers such as India and China who are still under a form of political sovereignty that can be classified as un-democratic. It will be a good way of “de-colonising†general learning and provide a deeper lens into why these nations have struggled so much after colonisation and how has it impacted its people and their policies. It will be interesting to delve deep in considering the wealth these nations held pre-colonialism, but somehow struggled when it came to nation building. I will compare this with the USA, which as a white nation, did not suffer in the same manner to further exemplify my point.
