Millennium Fellowship Project: Teaching for Success X Punto Cafe
Tijuana is recognized as the epicenter of migrant communities in Mexico, a destination for thousands of people seeking change in their lives and chasing the so-called "American dream." However, many of them are unaware of the real challenges involved: violence, exploitation risks, discrimination, stagnation, and poverty. As a result, a large portion of the migrant population ends up stranded in Tijuana, facing difficult conditions and lacking adequate support networks. My proposal is to create a network of upgraded shelters, designed not only to provide temporary refuge but also comprehensive support programs. These centers would offer educational classes (Spanish, English, job skills), legal, psychological, and employment counseling, as well as orientation workshops to present the real picture of migration processes and available alternatives. Furthermore, we would assist migrants in recovering their official identities (documentation), finding decent housing, and obtaining formal employment, giving them a second chance to rebuild their lives in Tijuana or return safely to their home countries. The ultimate goal is for these shelters to become not just transitional spaces, but true bridges for personal transformation, dignity, and social reintegration, benefiting both migrants and the broader Tijuana community.
