" Becoming a Millennium Fellow turned my hope of being heard by a broader audience into reality. I am inspired to use this opportunity to connect with global change makers and share the modern history of my region. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Central Asia in the Big World

Central Asia in the Big World is an educational podcast that unpacks Central Asia’s politics, identities, and global image. The podcast will unveil how Central Asian countries reflect on Soviet past and what makes their independence today. Hosted by CEU student Tamila Norkulova, each 15–25 minute episode will break stereotypes and connect regions that rarely talk to each other. With expert voices and fresh narratives, the podcast will clarify misconceptions, offer political and historical context and spotlights Central Asia’s place in the world.

About the Millennium Fellow

Tamila is a student at Central European University, as well as a journalist and social media manager for independent Russian media outlets. Originally from Uzbekistan, she has also lived in Kazakhstan and Russia. While in Russia, she took part in a project investigating corruption and lack of transparency in higher education. Now, pursuing her studies in Politics and Economics, Tamila aims to focus on telling the stories of her native region. She believes that Central Asia’s place in cultural, geopolitical, and economic contexts is often overlooked—and she is determined to change that.
