" My work is driven by the belief that research can bridge the gap between lived realities and policy decisions. Through the Millennium Fellowship, I am excited to collaborate with a global community to amplify my efforts in gender economics, public health, and sustainability, ensuring that my contributions align with the SDGs and create equitable, lasting change "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Economic Empowerment of Migrant Women Vendors

This project focuses on understanding the socio-economic conditions of migrant female street vendors, a vital yet often marginalized group within the informal urban economy. Street vending plays a key role in making affordable goods and services accessible to the local population while providing livelihoods to those from vulnerable backgrounds. Migrant women vendors, in particular, contribute significantly to the city’s economy while sustaining their families through their income despite facing multiple layers of disadvantage.
As part of the project, a survey was conducted among 90 respondents from Hulimavu, Chickpete, and Jayanagar markets in Bangalore to explore their workplace realities, challenges, and aspirations. The findings highlight issues such as poor infrastructural facilities, limited policy awareness, and health and safety concerns that affect their stability and dignity at work. Through direct interaction and observation, the project aims to shed light on their daily struggles and advocate for institutional and policy support to make their livelihoods safer and more sustainable.
