" Growing up, I never had the chance to share a close bond with my own grandparents, but I have always carried a deep well of love and respect for the elderly. Spending time in old age homes has shown me the joy that simple acts of care and companionship can bring. As a Millennium Fellow, I want to dedicate myself to ensuring that senior citizens feel valued, heard, and connected creating moments of dignity, laughter, and belonging in the later chapters of their lives. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Golden Bonds
Golden Bonds is a student-led initiative focused on improving the emotional and physical well-being of senior citizens, a rapidly growing yet often overlooked demographic. The project addresses critical issues such as social isolation, loneliness, and inactivity by offering structured opportunities for companionship, movement, and engagement. As the project lead, I will collaborate with Nightingales Aging Centre in Bangalore, where I currently volunteer, to expand and organize the program into something more impactful. Through Golden Bonds, I will conduct regular sessions that include light physical activities, cognitive games, creative workshops, and storytelling, all aimed at fostering connection and joy among elderly residents. To scale the initiative, I will onboard a group of student volunteers from my campus, who will undergo orientation and support to actively participate in the program. Each volunteer, or Companion, will spend a dedicated week or more at the center, co-leading interactive sessions with the elderly. Golden Bonds is not just about volunteering; it’s about creating a culture of care, understanding, and respect between generations. The initiative aims to nurture dignity, warmth, and human connection, while encouraging young people to see aging not as a decline but as a stage of life deserving of love and presence.
