Millennium Fellowship Project: SMART VERTICAL ROADSIDE IRRIGATION FARMING
I am working on a smart vertical roadside irrigation farming project that focuses on optimizing public land use along the roadsides for production of food. the same way Kenya power has used the public space for energy infrastructure, i also recommend these areas to be used for vertical farming. my idea is to install vertical planting structure along highways, major roads and any other roadside spaces to take advantage of efficient utilization of limited land. The structures will have overhead irrigation pipes that supply water from the nearest water sources like treated wastewater, boreholes and rainwater harvesting. My project will majorly focus on perishable and growing fast-growing such as herbs, fruits and vegetables that supplies local markets. Since this method of farming produces higher yields with less space i believe it's an important innovation to boost food security while keeping urban and road areas green. In addition, this initiative creates job opportunities, reduces urban heat and improves to cleaner air that contributes positively to climate related issues in urban settings. With proper collaboration and integration this project will also contribute to the generation of solar energy that promotes sustainability.
