Millennium Fellowship Project: Roots of Tomorrow: Reconnecting Youth with Nature

The new generations have been losing connection with the nature that surrounds them. It is common for people not to know how to identify and recognize the importance of the local fauna and flora. This disconnection leads to disconnection from environmental issues, increased exploitation of natural resources, and a lack of awareness about changes in the local environment. Connection with nature benefits mental health and encourages the protection and conservation of local biodiversity, appreciation of ecosystem services, and environmental stewardship. The main goal of this Project is to educate students in the Southeast region of Brazil and support them in discovering more about the local flora, threatened species, and the ecological importance of protecting their surrounding environment.

About the Millennium Fellow

Ana Vieira Semeghini is a student from Columbia University in the city of New York, majoring in Sustainable Development and Business Management. While growing up in Brazil, Ana developed a passion for biodiversity and sustainability, recognizing the importance of connecting people with nature to ensure that ecosystems are valued, respected, and protected.
In her academic work and professional experiences, Ana focuses on how business tools like management, finance, and impact measurement can create positive environmental, economic, and social impact. Ana has work experience in the energy sector and also has a strong interest in the role of decarbonization strategies in advancing the economy. After graduation, she plans to bridge sustainability and business by helping organizations develop sustainable practices that create shared value for companies, communities, and ecosystems.
