" "Resilience and empathy, shaped by growing up in Kashmir, drive my passion for social justice and advocacy. My work is rooted in amplifying unheard voices and aligning local action with global change. The Millennium Fellowship will strengthen my ability to design impactful initiatives, grounded in the UNAI principles and Sustainable Development Goals. Through this platform, I aim to transform lived experiences into solutions that inspire equity, dignity, and hope for communities everywhere." "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Beyond The Silence

Beyond The Silence {BLS} seeks to map and address the hidden inequities in education for children with sensory disabilities—particularly those who are deaf, mute, or blind. The project will document gaps in teacher–student ratios, enrollment and dropout rates, quality of instruction, accessibility of infrastructure, availability of trained staff, and the use of assistive technologies. The data will be gathered from schools, teachers and parents and will provide a broader view of the discrepancies in provision of education.

About the Millennium Fellow

Hibasha Shafi is a young and academically driven undergraduate student of Psychology, pursuing a minor in Economics. Born and raised in Srinagar, Kashmir, she has grown up witnessing the challenges and injustices that have long shaped the daily lives of her community. These lived experiences profoundly influenced her worldview and ignited a lifelong commitment to advocating for social justice.
From an early age, Hibasha developed a strong sense of responsibility towards amplifying the voices of those often unheard. She has been particularly passionate about issues such as human rights, immigrant rights, and women’s empowerment. Her determination stems not only from personal observation but also from a deep belief in the power of advocacy to effect meaningful change.
Throughout high school and into her university years, Hibasha has consistently engaged in initiatives that promote social awareness and justice. Her leadership reflects a vision that extends beyond her local community, aspiring to bring global attention to the struggles and resilience of her people, as well as others facing systemic inequalities.
Committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive world, Hibasha aims to align her academic pursuits, leadership skills, and advocacy efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. She envisions contributing to global action that not only addresses injustice but also fosters lasting social transformation.
