" Millennium Fellowship offers a collaborative platform where I can refine the social, academic, and organizational skills. By learning alongside exceptional peers and exchanging ideas across disciplines, I will sharpen strategies that turn awareness into action—closing the persistent gap between inclusive rhetoric and genuine participation for persons with disabilities, and translating sustainability advocacy into tangible, everyday practice. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: REACH

Our project gives new life to idle items while supporting a more inclusive and equal community. In partnership with BUY42—a charity chain where over half the employees are people with disabilities— we are currently conducting two major events. First is collecting second-hand goods from students, check their quality, and transport them to BUY42 stores or open up flea shop in our campus. This not only promotes sustainability by reducing waste but also raises funds to support the employment and welfare of people with disabilities. Secondly, to build deeper understanding, we created a “One-day Store Manager” program. Students volunteer at BUY42 stores in Shanghai, working alongside staff with disabilities. It’s a hands-on way to learn about inclusive workplaces, grow empathy, and see the impact of small, thoughtful actions. In the future, we hope to do even more—organizing awareness campaigns, community outreach, and talks by organizations that support people with disabilities. Our goal is to create a stronger culture of equality and understanding on campus and beyond. Through simple actions like donating, volunteering, or just listening, we’re building a project that’s sustainable, meaningful, and rooted in mutual respect.

About the Millennium Fellow

Yuhan Qiu is a determined and empathetic sophomore at Duke Kunshan University, majoring in psychology to understand the human mind and to ease the burdens it carries. Born in Kunshan, China, she has long focused on disability inclusion and sustainable living, turning compassion into sustained action.
In high school, as editor-in-chief of the campus news agency, she guided twenty student reporters to craft stories for the school’s website and WeChat account, learning to listen first and lead second. That same empathy now shapes her university work: she spearheaded a university-corporation program with a disability-friendly thrift shop and founded a student organization that partners with multiple social enterprises to advance inclusion and sustainability. Yuhan’s persistence and courage keeps every project moving—whether negotiating partnerships, coordinating volunteers, or refining strategies. Through the Millennium Fellowship, she will deepen these efforts and create measurable impact toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
