" Knowing I have a chance to make someone’s life a little better in whatever way I can is where I find the most joy. Growing up with enough food on my plate and the chance to learn has shaped my entire life, but I know many around us never get that. I believe that when everyone has proper nutrition, they have the strength to learn, grow and dream. I want to make sure this basic necessity isn't a privileged for a few, it’s a right that everyone deserves. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Aahar

Project Aahar aims to tackle two major problems: food wastage and hunger. In India, approximately 78.2 million tonnes of food is wasted annually, which could feed around 377 million people. This initiative seeks to connect excess food from events, particularly weddings, to the hungry. Initially, the focus will be on collaborating with local banquet halls, caterers, and wedding venues, alongside NGOs and local leaders. Through these partnerships, excess food will be collected and distributed to those in need via designated "Aahar points" in localities. As an engineering student, I plan to implement technology to streamline the process. A platform will allow event venues and NGOs to collaborate efficiently and monitor food distribution. The first phase will focus on areas around my university, where we’ll manually survey venues, assess how they handle excess food, and identify local NGOs working on food-related issues. By reducing food wastage and ensuring no one sleeps hungry, Project Aahar aims to address critical societal issues on a local scale and scale up over time.

About the Millennium Fellow

Yuvraj Malik is an engineering student at Delhi Technological University with a big vision and an even bigger drive. He grew up in New Delhi with good schooling, healthy food, and the steady support of family, comforts he later realised weren't part of every child’s story. He has always found it hard to accept why everyone doesn't have equitable access to these necessities. To him, a curious mind and the right nourishment can spark any dream to life. Now, driven by his love for technology, he’s working to make that spark possible for everyone because- when one person rises, we all rise together.
