" In a world where women are breaking out of their confinements, overriding societal expectations and building to thrive not survive, the least I can do is to bring this opportunity to girl children in the grassroot level who are not yet exposed to the possibilities the world holds for them. I want to join the Millennium Fellowship because I see it as a space where my voice and my work for gender equality can grow stronger. Coming from Ebonyi State, I have seen and even felt what gender inequality does to women and girls. Practices like female genital mutilation are still carried out here, and many women being oppressed do not even know or accept they are being oppressed. I do not want to just complain about it, I want to be part of the change. The Fellowship will give me the mentorship, skills, and support I need to catch these girls young and instill in them a mindset that will help them build a life beyond the scope of motherhood. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Her Path to Power

In this part of the world where the HPP team finds ourselves, we have little to no control on how most male counterparts perceive and treat women. It is the part of the world where we still constantly have to deal with laymen who don't understand the essence of gender equality. Thus, Her Path to Power is a girl-centered initiative designed to equip middle to late-adolescent girls with knowledge about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), as well as the skills and confidence they need to protect themselves, lead their peers, and advocate for gender equality and safety in their communities. The initiative will include mentorship programs, leadership development, self-defense and personal safety workshops, legal literacy sessions, and mechanisms for reporting violence. Our goal is to ensure that these girls come out into the world willing to thrive, fully self-aware that they are free to fly and alert on ways to defend themselves and their peers against gender-based violence.

About the Millennium Fellow

Chimdalu Nnenne Egwu is a fifth year medical student at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), born and raised in Ebonyi State. As a victim of gender based inequality, she draws strength from her experiences to advocate for others who remain unheard. In her society, where harmful practices like female genital mutilation and other forms of oppression persist, Chimdalu challenges the hard eared mindsets that normalize such acts. She is dedicated to advancing gender equality and building a future where women and girls are valued, respected, and given the freedom to thrive not just survive.
