" "Curiosity and creativity drive all kinds of research. To make a difference, we need to be curious, creative and be given the scope to display such skills. UN Millennium Fellowship gives us that platform to grow our untapped potential. Being a UN Millennium Fellow will help dive into unchartered territories and to discover their secrets. It's the thrill of making a difference in this vast universe that excites me and makes me complacent." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: From Man to Mangrove
Our project, From Man to Mangrove, focuses on raising awareness about blue carbon
and mangrove conservation. We are from Bangladesh, home to the Sundarbans, the world’s
largest mangrove forest. Mangroves, along with seagrasses, salt marshes, store up to
five times more carbon dioxide than tropical rainforests, making them critical for fighting
climate change. This stored carbon is called blue carbon. To spread awareness, we
hosted seminars at universities and schools, including our own campus, to educate
students about blue carbon and why it matters. At the end of each session, attendees
took a survey to test their knowledge and share their opinions on mangrove
conservation. Based on their responses, we plan on recruiting passionate volunteers to join
forces with NGOs for hands-on mangrove restoration activities. We haven't put this plan in action yet but hope to do so soon. Combining education with action, this project aims to inspire young people to protect our
coastal ecosystems and contribute to a more sustainable future. This project will
essentially has started as an awareness campaign and hopefully will then manifest itself in actionable
solutions.
