I’m building a support system to help transfer students get into medical school. Many transfer students miss out on early access to research, shadowing, and clinical volunteering, simply because we arrive at universities later and often come from community colleges that don’t have the same resources. My project has three main parts. First, I plan to organize workshops for transfer students at both universities and community colleges. These will cover how to build a strong medical school application — from research to leadership — and will be led by doctors and medical students who were transfer students themselves. Second, I want to partner with local hospitals and clinics to reserve clinical volunteer spots specifically for transfer students, giving them a fairer chance to gain experience. Lastly, I’m developing a website that gathers and posts research, volunteering, and leadership opportunities so transfer students across the country can easily find and apply. I’m doing this because transfer students — especially those coming from low-income backgrounds — face more barriers to enter medicine. But we fight hard. We deserve every opportunity to succeed, and this project will help make that happen.
