" My passion for technology and education fuels my commitment to creating opportunities for underserved communities. As a Millennium Fellow, I am eager to collaborate with visionary peers to bring bold ideas to life, aligning with the UNAI principles and SDGs. This fellowship will empower me to amplify my impact, inspire the next generation to believe in themselves and their dreams, and equip them to empower others in their own communities. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Breaking the Digital Divide

Breaking the Digital Divide is a 10 week virtual education initiative created by Millennium Fellows from Florida International University: Houytieng Ung, Rocio Peña, Alessandra Uribe, and Ashley Prado. The project connects FIU students with youth and women from the Gihon Women Empowerment Center in Kenya to promote shared learning, cultural exchange, and access to quality educational opportunities.
Guided by the United Nations goals of Quality Education and Reduced Inequalities, the project uses weekly interactive workshops that explore topics such as health education, creativity, technology skills, career exploration, and emotional well being. Each session brings participants together in conversation and hands on activities that encourage storytelling, reflection, and the discovery of new skills.
The project was inspired by the team’s lived experiences navigating educational barriers as immigrants and first generation students. Because of this, the focus is not only on teaching but also on creating a community where participants support one another, learn from each other, and build confidence. The workshops are designed to open doors to knowledge while creating an environment where curiosity and empowerment can grow.
Breaking the Digital Divide is ultimately about connection. By bringing together two communities from different parts of the world, the project helps students strengthen their global awareness, expand their perspectives, and understand their potential to lead and make a positive difference.
