" “I see research as a path to transform curiosity into action and small ideas into meaningful impact. The Millennium Fellowship inspires me because it creates a space to learn from others, exchange ideas, and grow collaboratively. I hope to contribute my perspective while gaining insights from peers, turning shared knowledge into real-world solutions that advance the UN’s vision and create positive change in communities.” "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Breaking the Digital Divide

Breaking the Digital Divide is a 10 week virtual education initiative created by Millennium Fellows from Florida International University: Houytieng Ung, Rocio Peña, Alessandra Uribe, and Ashley Prado. The project connects FIU students with youth and women from the Gihon Women Empowerment Center in Kenya to promote shared learning, cultural exchange, and access to quality educational opportunities.
Guided by the United Nations goals of Quality Education and Reduced Inequalities, the project uses weekly interactive workshops that explore topics such as health education, creativity, technology skills, career exploration, and emotional well being. Each session brings participants together in conversation and hands on activities that encourage storytelling, reflection, and the discovery of new skills.
The project was inspired by the team’s lived experiences navigating educational barriers as immigrants and first generation students. Because of this, the focus is not only on teaching but also on creating a community where participants support one another, learn from each other, and build confidence. The workshops are designed to open doors to knowledge while creating an environment where curiosity and empowerment can grow.
Breaking the Digital Divide is ultimately about connection. By bringing together two communities from different parts of the world, the project helps students strengthen their global awareness, expand their perspectives, and understand their potential to lead and make a positive difference.
