" "It has always been a vision to create a space where creative minorities like me who are often overlooked can come together to exist safely and use their creativity and talents as a fuel for change and growth. I'm certain being a Millennium Fellow and associating other brilliant minds will help trigger intelligent ideas to birth this dream to life." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Creative Haven
Being a woman and an artist is a part of my identity that I am so grateful for and I'm super proud of. Coming into this school a freshman, I was full of expectations but was disappointed to find no community that could hold me accountable or share my wins with. So, I plan on creating a safe space for women in my school who are also creatives of different forms (Visual art, performing arts etc) where we can hold each other's hands, hold ourselves accountable, share opportunities with each other and just be. It might sound so simple, but in this part of our world, this is a difficult task as art is seen as "secondary and not real skills" and women in art are always looked down on and not taken seriously. Bringing this type of community, we are challenging the status quo and sharpening our skills. This space is considered a safe space for other marginalized women. We celebrate our femininity and creativity, remind ourselves of how worthy of love we are.
About the Millennium Fellow
Ekhijeme Mary Ovie is a young bright and talented sociology student at the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) from Edo state, Nigeria. She has a passion for helping amplify the voices of minority groups and women generally. They believe everyone should have a seat at the table regardless of their race, gender identity, tribe, religion and sexuality. Her love for activism exposed her to learning about feminism at a very tender age and using their writing to help touch on sensitive topics that people tend to shy away from. When Ekhijeme is not writing or listening to music, they have their nose buried in a book.
