" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it will help me use my pharmacy knowledge and community health experience to reach more women and girls. I want to learn from other young leaders, share what I know, and work together to create simple, practical health solutions that last. This Fellowship is a chance for me to grow, expand my outreach, and make sure more women feel informed, confident, and supported in taking charge of their health. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Gender Equality: Empowering Women about their Health
My Millennium Fellowship project promotes gender equality through storytelling, a 2-minute impact video, and youth-focused discussions. It raises awareness about everyday bias, encourages students to challenge stereotypes, and uses social media to spread the message. The goal is to shift mindsets and support equal opportunities for everyone.
During my Millennium Fellowship journey, my project evolved from an assignment—it became a real connection with young people, especially girls who often feel unheard. My goal was simple: create a space where they could learn, question, and speak freely about the issues that shape their lives. And, honestly, the experience went beyond what I expected. After my sessions, many girls came back to talk to me privately about their health, their bodies, and things they didn’t feel comfortable sharing anywhere else. That moment showed me that the project wasn’t just informative—it was trusted.
About the Millennium Fellow
My name is Gbemisola Esther Folorunso, a 500-level Pharmacy student at Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Nigeria. Growing up as a pharmacist’s daughter, I saw how women and girls suffered silently from preventable health issues due to a lack of information or fear. My studies and experiences have equipped me to address these challenges through community discussions, health education on topics like family planning, menstrual hygiene, PCOS, nutrition, and safe sex, often in Yoruba for better understanding. I also educate encourage girls to pursue STEM and health careers. Through the Millennium Fellowship, I aim to expand my outreach and create lasting health education initiatives.
