" In a college campus, an area focused on academic development, safety is vital to maintain a supportive and encouraging environment for students. Throughout my college tenure, I have seen many incidents involving the people I care about, specifically in Greek life, and it is time for a change. I believe that with the right resources and education, Greek organizations will be able to create environments where safety is just as much a priority as tradition is. I hope to make Greek life a place where students feel protected and safe. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: SafeGreek Intiative

In an area that is focused on academic and career development, safety is crucial for maintaining a supportive and secure environment for students. Campus safety has become a common concern among students and parents across the nation due to the increasing amount of crime, harassment, and assault. Around 23000 criminal incidents (NCES 2024), 24% of females and 6.8% of men experiencing sexual assault or rape (RAINN), and 47% hate crimes due to race (NCES 2024) are being reported every year throughout the nation. In addition, there are a significant number of alcohol related injuries/deaths which need to be addressed. Georgia Tech does an exceptionally good job regarding safety but a campus safety initiative could educate students and raise awareness about resources around campus. Safety around campus is vital for students in order for them to maintain their academic performance. There are various studies that indicate poor safety across campuses causes fear and anxiety in students which lead to heightened stress levels. By educating and creating a safe learning environment for students, they would be more willing to engage in extracurriculars and create a positive social community at Georgia Tech. Investing time and energy in campus safety is the key to success in any community and will greatly improve any learning environment.

About the Millennium Fellow

Akarshana Arunkumar is a third-year neuroscience student at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, USA. Akarshana has single handedly seen the impacts of crime, harassment, and alochol-related incidents on people around her. She is passionate about creating a safer and more inclusive environment on campuses, starting with her own. For her current project, she plans to create a campus safety initiative that educates students and raises awareness of the resources on campus, particularly in Greek life. By addressing these issues, she hopes to build a positive and safe space that will allow students to feel supported. After she graduates, Akarshana hopes to attend medical school and become a doctor, cultivating her passion for helping others through advocacy in physical and mental well-being.
