" I believe we cannot be truly healthy without understanding our mental health. What has always struck me is how differently mental health is perceived around the world, shaped by diverse cultures and traditions. This motivates me to expand existing mental health curricula, which often focus on a Eurocentric framework, to reflect the wide range of perspectives that truly define it. I want to create spaces where everyone’s experiences and understandings of mental health are acknowledged and valued. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Mental Melting Pot

I founded Mental Melting Pot because I saw a glaring lack of diversity in the content I learned in my IB Psychology course as a junior. As someone who loves learning about mental health while also being immersed in traditional Indian medicine due to my nanu (grandpa) being an Ayurvedic practitioner, I knew that there was so much more that students needed to explore in the mental health field. I began by assembling a team of experts on both mental health and curriculum writing. As of now, with their help, I've developed an extensive curriculum that focuses on specific world regions and their respective cultural practices and perceptions that impact their view of mental health and how they treat it. I'm now working to transfer this curriculum into easily-accessible kits for students to interact with and glean the essential knowledge of how to understand their minds. The most important part of this project for me is representation. Growing up in the rural state of Nebraska, I never saw myself and my culture on the screens in my classrooms. I want to change that for generations to come.
