" Throughout my life, I have been someone who naturally observes the problems around me and feels a strong responsibility to address them. Whether through debates, discussions, or civic engagement, I have always tried to play my part as an active citizen, believing that even small actions contribute to a larger culture of responsibility. However, I also recognize that individual efforts often need structure, collaboration, and institutional support to create meaningful and sustainable impact.
The Millennium Fellowship provides exactly that opportunity. It allows me to channel my curiosity and sense of responsibility into a more tangible form of change, supported by an academic framework and a community of like-minded peers. What excites me most is that this journey is not just personal—it is aligned with the United Nations’ mission and the Sustainable Development Goals, which adds both legitimacy and global perspective to the work I wish to do. I see this fellowship as a platform where my ideas can translate into action, with the potential to grow beyond the individual into collective progress. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Safe Futures: Education, Dignity and Care
Safe Futures is a campus-led initiative The “Safe Futures” initiative is conducted in partnership with HNLU’s Millennium Fellows. It involved direct interaction with students through thematic workshops, mentorship sessions, and awareness campaigns across selected schools. The program structure is divided into the following components:
• Education and Mentorship: Monthly sessions for students aged 10–16 focusing on academic support, awareness of rights, and moral education. HNLU student volunteers acted as mentors, offering a safe and supportive environment for open learning.
• Child Safety, Legal Awareness, and Health Education:
Workshops facilitated by Millennium Fellows focused on empowering children with essential knowledge about their rights and well-being. These sessions covered protection under the POCSO Act, safe reporting mechanisms, and general legal awareness on child rights and cyber safety, along with practical guidance on sanitation, menstrual health management, hygiene practices, and waste segregation, fostering a holistic understanding of safety, dignity, and personal care.
• Gender Equality and Respect: Structured classroom discussions and interactive activities designed to promote inclusivity, non-discrimination, and empathy.
• Animal Welfare and Environmental Sensitization (“Healing a Paw” Campaign): Promoting kindness toward stray animals, responsible pet care, and environmental preservation.
About the Millennium Fellow
My name is Devesh Mishra, and I am a 19-year-old law student originally from Mumbai, currently pursuing my studies at Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh. From a young age, I have been deeply interested in law, governance, and public policy, and this passion has only grown stronger with my academic journey.
My early exposure to debates and Model United Nations (MUNs) played a significant role in shaping my outlook towards critical issues of justice, rights, and policy-making. These experiences not only enhanced my advocacy skills but also instilled in me the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and structured reasoning in addressing challenges at both national and global levels.
I am particularly proud and excited to have been selected as a United Nations Millennium Fellow, an opportunity that allows me to align my academic interests with global goals and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development initiatives. This fellowship represents both recognition of my commitment to creating positive impact and a platform to further expand my learning and leadership.
As I continue my journey in law, I aspire to combine legal scholarship with a practical approach to social change, striving to make a meaningful contribution to society through informed policy and justice-oriented initiatives.
