" Being empathetic, innovative and impact-oriented drives my work in early childhood education and community development. I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it offers a collaborative platform to strengthen these qualities. The fellowship will enable me to make my initiatives in schools and communities more effective, aligned with the UNAI principles and SDGs, also help me envision creative ways to support children’s learning, well-being, and empowerment while driving meaningful social change. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Start Early, Get It Right

My Millennium Fellowship project, Start Early, Get It Right, has two main parts. The first part focuses on menstrual sanitation for primary school girls. Most programs only target secondary school girls, but during my teaching practice I met a Primary 5 girl who had her first period unexpectedly, and that moment showed me that younger girls also need guidance, support, and access to pads. I visited selected primary schools to confirm the need, reached out for donations, and received about 150 sanitary pads, which were shared across four schools so young girls can feel prepared, safe, and confident.
The second part of the project supports nursery and lower primary school children who struggle with spelling, pronunciation, identifying letters, and understanding letter sounds. Many of these children come from low-income homes where parents cannot give enough academic support, so the aim is to help them build strong basic literacy skills early. Both parts of the project are about filling important gaps and giving children the support they need at the right time.

About the Millennium Fellow

Adejumo Adeyinka is passionate about improving the lives of children and young learners. While teaching after earning her NCE, she observed that many children face challenges in early education and that adolescent girls often encounter barriers to menstrual health which affects both well-being and learning. Now, as an Early Childhood Education student at the University of Ibadan, she works to give children the strongest possible start in life and reduce the menstrual health challenges faced by female learners. From leading sanitary pad outreach programs to advocating for access to quality early childhood education, she aligns her efforts with the UN SDGs, promoting good health, quality education and gender equality.
