" Education has the power to transform lives, I know this because it transformed mine. I do this work to ensure that students from marginalized communities have the guidance, opportunities, and belief they need to dream bigger. The Millennium Fellowship excites me because it will help me scale my mentorship initiatives, collaborate with change makers worldwide, and build solutions that uplift not just individuals, but entire communities. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Synapse - Indian Sign Language Translator
This project focuses on developing a Sign Language Recognition Tool that improves communication between Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing individuals and the hearing community. Using computer vision and machine learning, the prototype translates hand gestures into meaningful text or voice output. The goal is to make communication easier, support inclusion, and improve access to information, education, and basic services for people who use sign language.
About the Millennium Fellow
Bushra Khan, an undergraduate student at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women in Delhi, India, is driven by a deep belief in education as a catalyst for social change. Growing up in Chandni Chowk, India, she witnessed how the absence of quality education limits opportunities for economically weaker communities. Her own journey was transformed through Margins to Mainstream, inspiring her to mentor and empower students from similar backgrounds. This fuels her mission to guide beginners, especially from marginalized backgrounds, helping them enter and thrive in the field. She envisions not only building impactful software products for social good but also fostering a vibrant community that grows, learns, and achieves together. As a Millennium Fellow, she aims to scale these efforts into lasting, community-led change.
