Millennium Fellowship Project: AI for Financial Literacy in Rural India

Most people we interact with on a daily basis have sources of credit at the ready, right in their palms, With the rise of UPI, interest free-credit cards, and BNPL services we forget that the reality for many people in rural and tier-3 India is completely different, They have to rely on informal sources of credit, not due a lack of government aid or schemes but due to a lack of knowledge about them. Multiple govt, schemes are over-promoted but under-availed. The problem of financial illiteracy inhibits household economic growth and community well-being, resulting in generational cycle of strife. To bridge the gap between aid and beneficiaries, I am working on a Gen AI enabled app aimed at imparting knowledge about basic financial concepts like savings, interest, credit, and various govt. schemes. It creates digital avatars and engaging video/text modules, available in regional languages. We made sure that the app is easily available to all and inexpensive to build, deploy, and maintain. As after all, a financial literacy app (aimed at financially vulnerable members of our society) being costly would be great irony. Using AI to generate content allows us to meet these goals.
