Millennium Fellowship Project: Flood-Free Madras

Project Flood-Free Madras is a student-led effort at IIT Madras to reduce flooding on campus and, in the long run, in monsoon-prone cities like Chennai. The project focuses on simple, community-driven actions such as awareness workshops on rainwater seepage, regular volunteer drives to clear campus drains, and practical ideas like better pavements to help water soak into the ground. By cutting waterlogging in key campus areas and protecting both people and wildlife during heavy rains, the project advances SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

About the Millennium Fellow

He lives in Chennai, India (a coastal city) where there is a major flooding problem due to lack of good quality drainage systems in the city. Personally affected by the 2015 Chennai floods, where his house was damaged and flooded, he aims to improve the flooding and drainage system, starting from his undergrad college, and expanding into the entire city with tie ups with the government.
