Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Kisan
Sustainability as everyone understands is not just about preserving resources but preserving lives too. Farmers, who make up over 50% of India’s working population, face a multitude of challenges—ranging from unpredictable climate conditions and mounting debts to limited access to sustainable practices and reliable market support. Many problems force farmers to leave farming or use non-sustainable methods like too much fertilizer and pesticides. This harms the soil and crop quality. When the crop fails or they can’t repay their loans, they feel helpless and eventually they do the unthinkable - suicides. Project Kisan, Kisan meaning “Farmer†in Hindi, aims to empower the lives of farmers across the country, by teaching them sustainable and reliable farming practices. This includes educating the farmers via workshops, developing them newer and finer technologies and providing them guidance on risk mitigation and how and where to take loans and how to effectively use government grants and schemes.
