Millennium Fellowship Project: BetterLife
During my time as a hostel representative at IIT Madras, I saw how some students struggled with substance addiction. Some were trying hard to quit, but it was a tough and painful journey. This made me realize how dangerous early exposure to substances can be, especially for young people. It can destroy their health, education, and chances for a better future. What affected me most was seeing school students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, already exposed to harmful substances. For them, the consequences are even more severe. This experience inspired me to start the BetterLife project. BetterLife is an awareness initiative that aims to reduce substance use, like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, among school students, especially those who are underage and from disadvantaged communities. After visiting five local schools, we found that 5% to 10% of students had already tried substances, though the real number may be higher. Our project focuses on raising awareness through campaigns that teach students about the dangers of substance use and ways to resist peer pressure. We also give teachers, parents, and schools simple resources to help prevent substance use. BetterLife is about helping students make healthier choices for a brighter, drug-free future.
