Millennium Fellowship Project: Project VerdaLight

VerdaLight is a project that aims to help people in rural and coastal areas of Bangladesh where people face challenges such as unreliable electricity, rising sea levels and salty water ruining crops. In rural areas, many people still use traditional ways of cooking that creates harmful smoke which pollutes the environment and causes harmful diseases. Our project will bring clean and affordable energy solutions like solar power and environment friendly fire fuel like biochar to these people. This will reduce environment pollution and improve their health. In coastal areas where rising sea level and salty soil are big problems, our project will introduce floating farms on bamboo rafts. These can grow vegetables even during floods. We will also promote the usage of crops that are salt tolerant. To solve the salty undrinkable water problem, we’ll use solar-powered desalination units that can make purify salty water. We will teach people how to use and maintain these systems. Finally, our project will help communities monitor their land and the quality of their water. We will encourage them to work together to ask for support from the government. Our main goal is to help these communities live healthier, safer and more sustainable lives.
