Dhaka's Thinking Bin initiative is a comprehensive, community-focused waste management ecosystem poised to address Dhaka's low 37% waste collection rate and move the city toward "zero waste to landfills." The core of the solution is a network of customized Smart Bins—the Thinking Bin System—deployed in households, public areas, and offices, which provides a holistic service including efficient collection, recycling, composting, and biogas production. User participation is incentivized through a structured disposal process involving a Kiosk Display and QR code labeling, which powers the "Trash to Taka" system, rewarding users with a 30% profit share from the generated value. Engagement is further driven by digital tools like the AR Dhaka character and a Holistic App, alongside Youth Engagement programs, while efficient routing optimizes waste collection to dedicated Recycle Stations. The project sustains itself financially through primary revenue streams including the Sale of Recyclables, Compost Sales, and Biogas Production, supplemented by PPPs and advertising on the smart infrastructure.
