Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology | Juja, Kenya | Advancing SDG 2, SDG 15 & UNAI 1

" I believe technology is a catalyst for sustainable change. My work—whether in leading Smart Nyuki’s IoT beekeeping innovation or empowering youth through tech initiatives—aims to solve real-world challenges and uplift communities. The Millennium Fellowship will amplify my ability to align these efforts with the UNAI principles and SDGs, equipping me to scale impact and inspire others to create solutions that matter. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Smart Nyuki
Smart Nyuki is a smart beekeeping system that helps farmers monitor their beehives in real time using simple, affordable technology. We place sensors inside and under the hive to track temperature, humidity, sound, and weight—data that gives insights into the health of the bees and helps farmers know the best time to harvest honey. If there’s a sudden change, like pests attacking or the bees getting stressed, the system alerts the farmer on their phone. This way, they can respond fast and avoid losses. We’re currently building the hardware system (including custom PCBs and the base that supports the hive), and testing it with real beekeepers in Kenya. Our goal is to improve honey production, protect bees, and make modern apiculture accessible to small-scale farmers.
