Jahangirnagar University | Dhaka, Bangladesh | Advancing SDG 3, SDG 15, SDG 13 & UNAI 9

" Since childhood, I have carried a restless curiosity; the need to ask why things are the way they are, and whether they could be different. The Millennium Fellowship excites me because it offers not just a platform for my voice, but a community where questioning turns into collaboration and conviction into collective action. For the first time, I will not be asking ‘why’ alone, but alongside change makers who believe, as I do, that the world can and must be more just, inclusive, and sustainable. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Project ReJuvenate
Jahangirnagar University is home to diverse species of plants and welcomes migrating birds every year. Due to a lack of a proper disposal system, the campus has become a waste dumping site. The water bodies have been affected the most, posing a threat to the diverse wildlife of this campus. Project reJUvenate highlights the word JU or Jahangirnagar University. Initially, we aim to start with a pilot project focusing on faculty of social science. We aim to set up a full-fledged waste disposal system around campus and return JU to its past glory. Short-Term Goals: 1. Pilot Program: Implement segregated waste bins. Work with the authority to set up proper plastic waste disposal 2. Raise awareness about waste segregation and proper disposal while collaborating with the nature clubs on campus. 3. Present a proposal to the authorities to make the Biogas plant functional again while collaborating with Grameen Shakti (NGO that setup the plant) and deducing the reasons behind its initial closure. Long-Term Goals: 1. Expand the waste disposal initiative around campus and substantially reduce waste dumping around campus. 2. Set up a sustainable biodegradable waste disposal system through the 3. Provide employment for the poor in the Biogas plant.
About the Millennium Fellow
"Finding the Faults in the Default" – Joyeeta Mazumder is an inquisitive BBA student at the Institute of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, deeply committed to social justice, women’s empowerment, and environmental sustainability. From an early age, she found herself questioning the default; challenging assumptions, noticing what was overlooked, and learning that the norm is not always right. Over the years, her curiosity and critical perspective have evolved into a focused passion for creating sustainable initiatives that address environmental challenges, amplify marginalized voices, and foster inclusive growth. Through the Millennium Fellowship, Joyeeta hopes to collaborate with diverse change makers, exchange innovative ideas, and actively contribute to projects that make a tangible, positive impact. She carries forward the belief that progress begins when we question what everyone else accepts, always seeking to find the faults in the default. So, she asks: why wait for others to act, when we have the power to drive change ourselves?
