" To me, leadership means inspiring others to take action for change. My creativity drives me to find new ways to address inequalities, and the Millennium Fellowship will help me shape these ideas into real, inclusive solutions that uplift communities and advance the SDGs. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Breaking the Chain Empowering the Underprivileged

Around our campus, many young people survive by selling tea, flowers, or small items on the street—trapped in a cycle where earning comes before learning, and the next generation often inherits the same struggle. My project, “Breaking the Chain,” addresses this problem by creating small, flexible learning opportunities for young earners who cannot attend formal education. The goal is to equip them with basic financial literacy, simple business ideas, and life awareness, so they can make more informed choices in their daily lives.
Through these short, practical sessions, the initiative aims to spark gradual but meaningful change — helping participants learn to manage income, save for the future, and value education not only for themselves but also for their children. In doing so, “Breaking the Chain” strives to transform cycles of survival into pathways of opportunity, creating a ripple effect of empowerment within the community.

About the Millennium Fellow

Sharmin Akter, an undergraduate economics student from Bangladesh, grew up in a small town before moving to Dhaka for higher studies. Witnessing the stark disparities deepened her commitment to equity and inclusivity. Alongside her academics, she actively engages in initiatives promoting women’s empowerment, education, and community development. Guided by creativity, curiosity, and a belief that even small actions can drive change, Sharmin works to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and contribute to building a more just and inclusive society.
