" Growing up in Kashmir taught me the value of hope—this work lets me turn that hope into real change by standing up for justice, creating opportunities, and building bridges between people and ideas. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Craft to Capital: Kashmir
My project “Craft to Capital: Kashmir” is an initiative designed to empower small-scale Kashmiri artisans and entrepreneurs, especially women, by helping them turn their traditional craft skills into sustainable income. It focuses on:
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Supporting artisans who are rich in talent but lack visibility, market access, and fair pricing, Teaching them digital skills, storytelling, and market connection strategies, Bridging the gap between creativity and opportunity so artisans can earn without depending on middlemen, Building confidence and helping them convert their artistry into economic independence
About the Millennium Fellow
Suzain Shafi, a law student from Kashmir, has always been driven by a desire to create meaningful change in her community. Growing up in a region with a complex history, she has witnessed the importance of dialogue, justice, and opportunity. She co-founded The Children of Conflict in 10th standard to support underprivileged children and orphans, focusing on education, health, and basic needs. She has volunteered with Kashmir Law Circle on free legal aid campaigns, worked with last year’s UN Fellows to uplift small-scale entrepreneurs, and continues to engage with various organisations. Her journey reflects a commitment to youth leadership and peace-building.
