" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow since it offers a chance to utilize my passion for mentoring young girls and applying technology for creating solutions that benefit the Sustainable Development Goals, especially education and gender equality. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Mentorship for Teenagers
My project was to mentor teenagers in schools within Mathare region of Nairobi aiming at empowering them academically, emotionally and socially. The mentorship programs, conducted through a designed program of personal growth, academic discipline, and leadership, have enabled students to gain confidence, pursue purposeful goals, enhance their study habits, and exposure to the future opportunities in terms of college opportunities, scholarships, and career choices. Values, responsible decision-making, and community impact were also the focus of the project and students were encouraged to consider themselves as potential leaders. Owing to this, a lot of learners mentioned that they felt their self-esteem had been boosted, they felt like they were more involved in the classes, had more definitive plans in their academic work and had developed a new outlook on their futures. On the whole, the project proved that thorough direction and the faith in the potential of a young person could really trigger the changes not only in the lives of separate students, but also in the community in general.
