Millennium Fellowship Project: Wellness-to-all

My project involves reaching out to communities in remote areas of Kenya. Individuals in these communities have trouble accessing the healthcare services that have already been made available in the country. One of the main barriers to utilizing these services is poverty. Another reason is a lack of key information on various medical conditions and health-related topics. To be an instrument of change in these communities, I have been working with my colleagues to organise and attend several medical camps in these areas. We usually come together as a team of healthcare providers (students pursuing medical courses and registered practitioners) to offer free consultations, diagnosis, medications, and health education to the people. In addition to working, we also get to experience new cultures by sharing meals mostly prepared by members of the specific community we are reaching out to. The medical camps last for a day or two, and they are usually amazing moments. I feel fulfilled when I give another person a reason to believe in humanity.

About the Millennium Fellow

Anne Valent Nyaoro is a smart and enthusiastic girl, currently pursuing Bachelor of Pharmacy at Kenyatta University. She has spent her whole life in Kenya, and currently resides in Nairobi, the capital. Anne's home county is Siaya, and during her stay here, she identified the challenges the community faced when it came to accessing healthcare. This moved her heart, and from early childhood, she vowed to ensure that healthcare was available to all. This dream later unfolded to the series of medical camps and community outreaches that Anne has been a part of throughout campus.
