" I am passionate about creating safe spaces where young people can access accurate information on health and make empowered decisions about their future. The Millennium Fellowship excites me because it offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate with peers who are equally driven to create change. Through this platform, I hope to strengthen my impact in advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights while contributing meaningfully to the Sustainable Development Goals. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Afya4Us

"Over the past couple of months, I have been leading a youth focused project that aims to promote good health, wellbeing, and gender equality. As a medical student, I use my knowledge and training to empower young people with clear, accurate, and practical health information. My goal is to support students in understanding their bodies, their rights, and the importance of taking charge of their health.
The project involves conducting interactive sessions, workshops, and open discussions in universities and other youth spaces. These sessions provide safe and supportive environments where young people can learn about important topics related to sexual and reproductive health and rights. The approach encourages participation, builds confidence, and reduces stigma around subjects that are often considered sensitive.
I have facilitated sessions on a wide range of topics including breast cancer awareness, menstrual health and body literacy, prevention of gender based violence, and youth advocacy related to health and rights. I have also covered many additional topics that students identified as important during our engagements. Each session focuses on empowering participants with reliable knowledge and practical skills that they can use in their daily lives.
In addition to conducting educational sessions, I work with other students and community members to mobilize support for vulnerable learners. This includes coordinating the collection and distribution of sanitary pads to students who are unable to access them. Through this component of the project, we aim to promote dignity, reduce period related absenteeism, and ensure that lack of resources does not limit a young person’s wellbeing or confidence.
Through this project, I aim to increase understanding of sexual and reproductive health among university students, build confidence in seeking and sharing health information, promote equality and safety, and encourage young people to take leadership in creating healthier communities. My work is guided by a commitment to improving wellbeing, promoting dignity, and supporting young people to become active contributors to positive change.
