Kenyatta University | Nairobi, Kenya | Advancing SDG 10, SDG 13, SDG 1 & UNAI 6

" I am excited to be a Millennium Fellow because it gives me the chance to grow alongside peers who are equally committed to creating real solutions for their communities. I've seen how waste, when left unmanaged, affects health, dignity, and opportunity, but I also believe it can be transformed into a resource that uplifts people. This work matters to me because it combines two things I care deeply about: restoring the environment and improving livelihoods. Being part of this fellowship will allow me to refine this vision, learn from others, and contribute to building a more sustainable and inclusive future. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: naiTAKA
naiTAKA is a community-driven waste management and recycling project in Kibera designed to improve environmental health while creating income opportunities for residents. The project mobilizes community members to collect waste from their neighborhoods and deliver it to designated sorting points, where it is separated and recycled into valuable products. Revenue from the recycled materials is then used to pay the collectors, creating a circular system where waste becomes a source of livelihoods rather than a community burden.
By turning dumping sites into cleaner, safer spaces, naiTAKA helps restore dignity in shared areas, protects children from health hazards, and supports a cleaner environment for households, schools, and small businesses. The project also encourages youth participation by introducing them to green economic activities and future opportunities in sustainable innovation.
