Millennium Fellowship Project: HEALTH and HYGIENE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
The project will educate children in schools about importance of maintaining good health and hygiene focused on teaching practical skills that students can adopt to stay healthy. It will be based on preparatory health talks with sessions where students shall be engaged on hand washing, oro-dental care, menstrual hygiene and preventive measures of diseases especially malaria, cholera, diarrhea and cough. It will feature learning methods especially peer-to-peer discussions on mental health issues, health skits on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and also providing a safer platform that encourages students to ask questions and experience sharing. School and community clean up events involving installation of dustbins, hand washing facilities and promotion of proper waste management culture among the students and the entire community shall be considered. Furthermore, such a project needs support and has to be sustained, we shall ensure collaboration and participation of parents and teachers since they spend more time with these students and so can help in guidance. According to a pilot study, 7 in 10 girls reach menace without menstrual knowledge. This project will ensure girls gain confidence by learning about menstrual hygiene and management. They will learn personal hygiene and become health community ambassadors.
About the Millennium Fellow
Kabise John Bulasio is a medical student at Kampala International University in Uganda, very passionate about health in schools and other social setting because empowering one young student is equivalent to empowering the whole community. We realize that students in a school setting come from different backgrounds and this greatly exposes them to a number of risks to infections such as Urinary Tract Infections, malaria and oro-dental infections.
With such a great opportunity of being selected as a Millennium fellow, we hope to improve and impact more lives positively.
