" I believe renewable energy has the potential to change the world for the better, but accessibility and awareness are currently big limiting factors to its widespread use and success. I'm excited to learn how to overcome these barriers by enhancing my skills in advocacy and empowerment through the Millennium Fellowship program. "

Millennium Fellowship Project: Solar for All Association

The Solar For All Association is a nonprofit organization that I am currently establishing. The mission of this organization is to guide student-led projects that increase awareness of and accessibility to solar energy and sustainability in local communities. I hope to engage with fellow college students from various backgrounds and majors to ensure that everyone feels like they play a role in making the world a more sustainable place. To do this, I am in the process of starting a student chapter of the nonprofit at my college, the University of Kansas. I am also pursuing various projects, including installing a solar canopy on campus, increasing the amount of solar lighting in the community, and spreading awareness about sustainability efforts. Through these endeavors, I hope to create a community in Lawrence, Kansas that is committed to making renewable energy and sustainable practices available to everyone.

About the Millennium Fellow

Alana Schmalzried-Lugo is an Electrical Engineering student at the University of Kansas. As a service-oriented leader, she's led initiatives for mental health awareness and inclusion in STEM, managed a redesign project for the Lawrence community shelter, served as a mentor in various capacities, and directed a water-access project for a village in Uganda. She's particularly excited about renewable energy, and is a founding member of the Solar For All Association, which empowers students to broaden awareness of and access to sustainability and clean energy in their communities. She aspires to someday help develop cheaper and more efficient renewable energy technologies.
