" "I look forward to being a Millennium Fellow because I think of engineering as more than problem-solving skills, but also community impact. I hope that with local collaborations, service, and innovative work we can build a better future than exists today." "
Millennium Fellowship Project: Fighting Hunger in Douglas County
For this project, I partnered with Just Foods, a nonprofit that aims to alleviate food insecurities in Douglas County, Kansas. For project day 1 (10/4), I organized a three-hour volunteer session where students volunteered at a local Hyvee to distribute food donation fliers to encourage shoppers to donate non-perishable food items to the organization. With more than nine volunteers, we were able to receive about 500 pounds of donated food items. For the second project day (10/25), I organized a two-hour volunteer session where volunteers worked at Just Foods to assemble the donated food items into food kits, sorting the items based on type and working to pack and sort the items. At the end of the volunteer shift, we were able to sort all of the donated food items in our possession.
