Millennium Fellowship Project: THRIVE MENTALLY, LIVE FULLY
At Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, I initiated a mental health awareness project after noticing many medical students silently battling stress, anxiety, burnout, and depression due to intense academic pressure, relationship issues and widespread stigma. Through interactive sessions, guest speakers (young doctors who openly shared their struggles), practical workshops on and burnout recognition, plus an anonymous feedback system and a confidential WhatsApp peer-support group, we reached over 100 students, gradually reduced stigma, built a strong support network, and empowered several to seek professional help for the first time. Despite challenges like initial low turnout, limited funds, and balancing my own studies, the growing participation and heartfelt testimonies including one student saying it “changed everything” by showing them it’s okay to ask for help proved the urgent need for such initiatives. Moving forward, I plan to expand this into a full Mental Health Awareness Week with mindfulness activities, and official campus partnerships to make mental well-being a permanent part of student life.
