Millennium Fellowship Project: Healthy Food for All

My Project has a personal goal, to address the growing issue of poor nutrition among students in my university. Being a student myself, I’i've seen how many students either skip meals or rely heavily on junk and processed foods due to tight schedules, financial constraints, or lack of awareness. This inspired my project, Healthy Food for All, which aimed to promote better nutrition among students of tertiary institutions through education, direct food support, and sustainable practices.
The project was carried out in three main phases:
Phase One: A Webinar
The first phase was a Webinar themed "Building Sustainable Nutrition Practices Among Tertiary Institution Students." This webinar was facilitated by Registered Dietitians from Nigeria and Pakistan to share insights on the importance of proper nutrition, especially for students in Tertiary Institutions. The goal was to raise awareness, provide practical strategies, and promote sustainable eating habits. We had students join in from different parts of the world, and the session was both engaging and enlightening. The feedback we received was deeply encouraging, many students said it was the first time they were hearing nutrition broken down in such a relatable way.
Phase Two: Survey and Food Pack Distribution.
Before launching the second phase, we conducted a survey across my Campus to understand how often students eat and how healthy their meals are. The results were alarming, a large number of respondents admitted to skipping meals, eating once a day, or relying solely on fast food. This gave me a clearer picture of just how needed this project was.
I reached out to brands, food companies, and individuals for sponsorship and partnership. Through the support received, I was able to organize a food drive and distribute raw food packs to 100 students on my campus. Each food pack contained nutritious foods like raw rice, beans, pasta, and fresh fruits, enough to support at least a few decent meals. The joy and gratitude from students who received the packs were heartwarming and reaffirmed the importance of what we were doing.
Phase Three: Sustainable Meal Plan Distribution
To make the project more impactful and lasting, we created and distributed a realistic and affordable weekly meal plan for students. The plan was curated in collaboration with professionals and was tailored to the average student’s budget and schedule. The aim was to help students make informed food choices even after the project had ended, empowering them to build long-term, healthy eating habits.
Looking back, this project helped me in many ways, from planning and coordination to fundraising and community engagement. But, it also showed me the power of collaboration, intentionality, and compassion. I’m grateful for the Millennium Fellowship platform that gave me the opportunity to bring this vision to life.
