" I do what I do because I am deeply passionate about children. I can’t stand to watch people, especially children, suffer or be denied the opportunities they deserve. Seeing children out of school stirs something in me, and I feel a strong responsibility to act. That’s why I'm excited to be part of this fellowship: it gives me the platform to contribute meaningfully, to connect with others who share this passion, and to create real change that gives children hope for a better future. "
Millennium Fellowship Project: The Reading Toolbox
Project Title: The Reading Toolbox
Project Summary
The Reading Toolbox is an education-centered initiative designed to equip orphaned children with practical reading and learning strategies that strengthen comprehension, retention, and long-term application of knowledge. While access to books is important, many children in underserved communities lack the skills to engage with texts effectively. This project bridges that gap by introducing research-backed techniques such as spaced repetition, the Feynman technique, active recall, mind mapping, mnemonics, and visualization, in simplified, age-appropriate ways.
The project will be delivered through an interactive workshop where children learn these strategies in a participatory manner. To ensure sustainability, caregivers and volunteers will also be engaged so they can continue reinforcing the approaches with the children beyond the workshop. A simplified Reading Toolbox Guide will be developed and made available for the caregivers as a resource to support ongoing practice.
Measurable Goals
1. Introduce at least five core learning strategies from The Reading Toolbox to children at the orphanage during an interactive workshop.
2. Develop a simplified Reading Toolbox Guide for caregivers/volunteers to use as a reference in reinforcing the techniques.
3. Engage caregivers and volunteers during the session to ensure the project’s impact continues beyond the workshop.
4. Assess comprehension and retention improvements through live activities such as peer-teaching and short recall exercises, with observable progress among participants.
5. Strengthen children’s confidence and engagement with reading, with participants able to demonstrate one or more techniques effectively by the end of the session.
