Millennium Fellowship Project: Project Ecosanitation
Project ECOSANITATION aims to revolutionize the menstrual hygiene industry in India and to steer it to a more sustainable alternative. Sanitary pads available in the market today contain 12% PE Polythene which takes these pads to take around 600-800 years to decompose. Project ECOSANITATION works towards making biodegradable sanitary pads made of 45% hemp fibre, 35% bamboo cellulose, 20% cotton cellulose, and bioplastic as the anti-leakage alternative in order to reduce the human footprint on Earth. This project also has the vision make sustainable living affordable in order to reduce the issue of period poverty in India and to make women aware of the importance of using menstrual hygiene products. During the fellowship period, the project conducted menstrual hygiene education campaigns and distribution of biodegradable sanitary napkins, with a focus on improving awareness and access to sustainable menstrual products. The project targets women in rural India and has impacted 335 women across seven different states of India.
